Biographie :
Sir Paul McCartney, né le 18 juin 1942 à Liverpool, est un auteur-compositeur-interprète et multi-instrumentiste britannique.
Il est le bassiste du groupe The Beatles, qui connaît un succès planétaire au cours des années 1960. Après sa participation aux Beatles, McCartney enregistre deux albums solo, McCartney et Ram, puis fonde le groupe Wings, rencontrant également le succès au cours des années 1970, avant de continuer de nouveau en solo par la suite. Nommé membre de l'ordre de l'Empire britannique en 1964, il est anobli le 31 décembre 1996 par la reine Élisabeth II au sein du même ordre de chevalerie, puis fait compagnon d'honneur en 2017 pour services rendus aux arts. En 2010, il reçoit également les Kennedy Center Honors.
Né dans une famille modeste, fils d'un musicien amateur et d'une infirmière qui meurt d'un cancer du sein alors qu'il n'est âgé que de 14 ans, il développe à l'adolescence une passion pour la musique et ses compétences instrumentales. Le 6 juillet 1957, il rencontre John Lennon et devient membre de son groupe, The Quarrymen, qui évolue pour former — avec George Harrison et Ringo Starr — The Beatles, dont il est le bassiste et un des chanteurs. Au sein du quatuor, à ce jour le groupe le plus populaire et lucratif de l'histoire, il forme avec Lennon le tandem d'auteurs-compositeurs le plus influent et prolifique de l'histoire du rock, à l'origine de plus de 200 chansons publiées en 45 tours ou sur des albums au succès international.
Tout d'abord guitariste, McCartney se charge de prendre la basse à la suite du départ de Stuart Sutcliffe en 1961. Si, dans un premier temps, il utilise la basse de Sutcliffe, la Höfner 500/5, il s'achète rapidement un nouvel instrument: la Höfner 500/1. Cette basse semi-acoustique, au corps de violon, a une forme symétrique, contrairement à la plupart des guitares électriques de l'époque. Elle peut donc être utilisée indifféremment par un droitier ou un gaucher comme lui, en inversant seulement l'ordre des cordes ainsi que le sens des encoches du sillet. Elle est indissociable de son image sur scène durant toute sa carrière.
Après la séparation des Beatles en 1970, McCartney lance deux albums en solo (McCartney sur lequel il est seul musicien et Ram seul album de sa discographie à être crédité Paul & Linda McCartney), puis forme le groupe Wings avec sa femme Linda et Denny Laine, un ancien membre des Moody Blues. La formation, à laquelle se grefferont au fil du temps plusieurs autres musiciens, enregistre 7 albums studio et 1 live bien accueillis par le public. Après avoir connu une notoriété mondiale, le groupe se dissout en 1981. ...
