Biographie :
James Alan Hetfield est un musicien et auteur-compositeur américain surtout connu pour être le co-fondateur, le chanteur/guitariste rythmique principal et l'auteur-compositeur principal du groupe de heavy metal américain Metallica. Hetfield est principalement connu pour son jeu rythmique complexe, mais effectue occasionnellement des tâches de guitare principale et des solos, à la fois en direct et en studio. Hetfield a cofondé Metallica en octobre 1981 après avoir répondu à une annonce du batteur Lars Ulrich dans le journal de Los Angeles The Recycler. Metallica a remporté neuf Grammy Awards et a sorti dix albums studio, trois albums live, quatre pièces de théâtre prolongées et 24 singles.
En 2009, Hetfield était classé no. 8 dans le livre de Joel McIver Les 100 plus grands guitaristes de métal et no. 24 par Hit Parader sur leur liste des 100 plus grands chanteurs de métal de tous les temps. Dans le sondage de Guitar World, Hetfield a été classé 19e plus grand guitariste de tous les temps, ainsi que deuxième (avec le guitariste principal de Metallica, Kirk Hammett) dans le sondage The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists du même magazine. Rolling Stone a placé Hetfield comme le 87e plus grand guitariste de tous les temps.
